Should we start worrying about the speed at which Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) is advancing at an accelerating rate? Or should we embrace the technology?
Automation by AI may displace jobs, especially in industries with routine tasks. On the other hand, AI can optimize processes and increase productivity, stimulating economic growth.
AI systems can reinforce existing biases if trained on biased data. It can also lead to breaches of privacy by collecting and analyzing vast amounts of personal data. It is therefore essential to develop clear guidelines and regulations to address ethical and security issues.
Walking with A.I.
I created an illustration about A.I. as part of my “Past to Present” series. A series where an old technique, or something from the past, is often combined with something new, or a new technique. Always mixed with humans.
You see in this illustration the well-known Tamagotchi toy, with the name parodied (TamaiGotcha). A digital pet to take care of, until death do us part. The person is combined with AIBO, Sony’s A.I. dog, or “robot with artificial intelligence” aimed at simulating human or animal life.
In the illustration, it is clear that humans still have the upper hand. But the question may soon become; who takes care of whom? In other words, will the dog soon bite the owner? Indeed, there are concerns about the development of autonomous weapons and the possibility of AI systems turning against their designers (think ‘superintelligence taking over the world’). Perfect material for movies in any case.
By the way, avoiding AI seems unrealistic given the rapid technological advances and the many benefits it can offer. As with the rise of social media, we see ethical concerns such as privacy fading a bit more into the background. While it is important that through regulation, education and ongoing evaluation, we harness the benefits of AI while minimizing the drawbacks.
So will we continue to walk with AI (Walking with AI)?
By the way, a female figure was deliberately chosen because we still lack the hand of women within Artificial Intelligence. They are there, but for the time being to a lesser extent and this creates an imbalance. In addition, the woman was chosen as the mother (of the AI child).
